Ultracet Uses

ULTRACET® (tramadol hydrochloride/acetaminophen) is a prescription pain medication and is used for the short-term (up to five days) relief of moderately-severe, acute pain.

How Ultracet works

Ultracet helps relieve pain in two ways: First Ultracet acts directly on parts of the brain and spinal cord to reduce pain. Secondly, it reduces the size of pain signals that travel from one nerve cell to another.

How to take Ultracet

The usual dose of Ultracet is two tablets every four to six hours as needed for the relief of pain. Patients should not take more than two tablets at a time nor more than 8 tablets per day. Taking more Ultracet than prescribed can increase your risk of seizure.

Ultracet precautions

Carbamazepine (Tegretol) can increase the rate of metabolic breakdown of tramadol, thus making tramadol less effective. Toxic doses of Ultracet in pregnant rats have resulted in toxic effects in the fetuses. Safe use during pregnancy has not been established.

Tramadol is excreted in breast milk. Safe use in nursing mothers has not been established.

What to tell your doctor

Before using Ultracet, tell your doctor if you're are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. The safety of Ultracet during pregnancy has not been established. Also, make sure your doctor knows about all the nonprescription and prescription medications you are using, especially if you are taking any of the following:

• Tranquilizers
• Sleeping pills
• Antidepressants
• Opioid pain medications (Tylenol, Codeine, etc.)

Ultracet side effects

Ultracet usually is well-tolerated. The most common side effects are constipation (1 in 17 patients), tiredness (1 in 17), and increased sweating (1 in 25). Because tramadol is chemically related to the narcotic class of drugs such as morphine and hydrocodone (Percocet), it can cause psychological or physical dependence, although it is less likely than narcotics to do so. An overdose of acetaminophen can result in severe liver damage.
